Public Sedtor Equality Duty

The three strands of the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) are to: eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation, and other prohibited conduct; advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not; and foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not. These are legally required considerations for public bodies when exercising their functions, as outlined in the Equality Act 2010.

Eliminate discrimination:

This involves preventing unlawful discrimination, harassment, and victimisation prohibited by the Act.

Advance equality of opportunity:

This requires public bodies to take steps to ensure that those with and without a protected characteristic have an equal chance to succeed.

Foster good relations:

This means actively working to promote good relationships between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
